Spring and Snow Fences

Happy Spring! Happy Passover! Happy Easter!

The weather is warming, slowly but surely, and the sun is shining brightly today. It's 50 degrees in my yard, and the hyacinths are trying to bloom, but down by the beach the wind is off the cold ocean water and brisk when it blows.

I've added a few pictures to chronicle the damage to some of the dune fences, and the restoration that a few of the neighbors have accomplished in front of their yards.

According to the town's conservation commissioner, the fences on the Sea Way beach will come down this spring, to "allow the dunes to replenish the beach." I'm not sure if this will work or not, but it's worth a try. Those fences are in disrepair at the moment, but will be taken out (hopefully) prior to Memorial Day. Guess I need to start getting bids on that bit of work. Have a great day, and a great Spring holiday!
There was more damage to snow fences, or dune fences, than usual this winter. I know I've talked about this before, but it is the most visible and dramatic change to the beaches. The erosion of sand is harder to capture in photographs, more subtle. In some cases, like over on the Seaway beaches, the fences are to be removed by Memorial Day weekend anyway, so the fact that they are already ripped to pieces doesn't matter as much...
New snow fences, or dune fences, went up in front of several of the Strandway properties, repairing the ones torn out by Mother Nature over the winter. There's even room for more seaweed behind them, since the ocean took much of what was there from last year.
Remember how the now fencing at the west end of the Strandway beach used to be back from the sand, surrounded by the tall dune grass? Not anymore.
